In Melbourne, Australia, the cleaning crew accidentally painted over the famous street graffiti artist Banksy's rat picture. Originally, the cleaning crew were called in by the neighborhood to inspect and clean the laneway since it was in pretty awful condition in terms of tagging, and also a whole lot of other people had dumped rubbish there.
However, the work that started in good intention, resulted in ruining the artwork of internationally renowned artist. To be honest, not many people care about graffiti artwork, and think it's just an act that makes the steet dirty.
These incidents point out the ignorance of the people who doesn't even know what artwork is in their neighborhood. However, it's understandable that people don't know of such artworks since nobody had informed them. And since the artwork is displayed in such a dirty environment surrounded by tagging messages, people could easily overlook.
The government should have formally announed and informed people sooner about the famous pieces around them as Melbourne Council chief executive Kathy Alexander said.
The ruined stencil, about the size of an A4 sheet of paper, was of a parachuting rat wearing aviator goggles. Above is the picture that resembles the ruined artwork.
Since this is the second time ruining Banksy's artwork, 'Little Diver' in 2008 in Melbourne city, government and community should settle the rules or methods ot protect the vulnerable artworks.
